Our Mohair Story

How it started

Mohair by Chommies began during the Covid lockdown, when production of many Chommies pieces had to pause.

At the time, Florence, who had been working with the team, suddenly had time on her hands. Nathalie, the founder of Chommies, asked her to try knitting a jersey similar to one she already owned and wore often.

There was no pattern, and no particular plan.

The first jersey was better than anyone had expected.

People noticed it. Then they asked for one of their own. What started as a single piece quickly became something worth continuing.
Susan, an experienced knitter who was working as the Chommies accountant at the time, helped develop a pattern so the garments could be made more consistently. As demand grew, so did the knitting team.

Today, Mohair by Chommies is made by more than 20 knitters working from their homes across South Africa.It is built around natural fibre, skilled hands, and a process that values time over speed.

Each garment carries the character of the person who made it, and is designed to be worn, lived in, and kept for years.
