How to Care for Mohair Knitwear

One of the most common questions is how to care for mohair knitwear. The good news is
that mohair is (maybe surprisingly) low maintenance.

Debbey, one of the knitters who works on Mohair by Chommies garments, explains that
she doesn’t wash her mohair garments that often. Instead, she airs them out frequently
between washes.

Like many natural fibres, mohair has a natural ability to resist odours and regulate
temperature. This means garments don’t need to be washed nearly as often as synthetic
fabrics. In fact, one of the best ways to refresh your jersey is simply to hang it somewhere with fresh air. “After wearing it, I’ll hang it outside for a while,” Debbey explains. “That’s usually enough to freshen it up.”

Washing your mohair
When your jersey does need a proper wash, gentle care will help keep it soft and beautiful for many years. Hand washing is always best. Use cool or lukewarm water with a mild wool detergent, and avoid rubbing or twisting the fabric too much. Mohair fibres are strong but delicate garments benefit from careful handling.

If your garment has been dyed using natural dyes, it’s a good idea to wash it separately
the first time, as some colour release may occur.

Drying your jersey
After washing, gently press out excess water with a towel rather than wringing the
garment. 

Lay the jersey flat on a clean towel to dry, reshaping it if needed. Avoid hanging wet
knitwear, as this can stretch the fabric.

Debbie has a simple rule for drying. “Flat is always best,” she says. “Then it keeps its
shape.”
